5 Things To Never Carry In Your Wallet (or Purse)

Do you even know all the things that are in your wallet or purse right now? Here are five items to look for and remove to limit your risk of identity theft if your wallet is lost or stolen:

  • Multiple credit cards. Carry just one card or possibly a debit card. Don’t carry specific credit cards (like a department store) or gift cards unless you’re going on a shopping trip. Thieves often use them without having to show identification. Good idea: Do a wallet inventory and photocopy all the cards you own so you can report their loss and replace them if necessary.
  • Your social security number. With this most important key to your identity and your name, thieves can do everything from opening new accounts to filing false tax returns. Good idea: Memorize your number. If you have a Medicare card, copy your card and black out the numbers except for the final four.
  • Your passport. If you’re going overseas you must travel with it, but that doesn’t mean you have to keep carrying it around. Good idea: Carry a photocopy and leave the original in your hotel lockbox.
  • Checks. Your checks show your bank routing and account numbers, and thieves often sign them and get away with it. Good idea: If you must carry checks, take just what you might need for that day. Also try online banking to pay your bills.
  • Password list. No one can remember all of them, I know. Good idea: Use an encrypted tool to store your password like the SplashID mobile app or LastPass.com for your computer.

Tap Into 200 Million LinkedIn Users To Grow Your Business

Are you on LinkedIn.com? This popular social network for professionals has over 200 million registered users in all business categories. Here are three ways to proactively expand your professional network and make your business more successful.

  1. Get your company seen by LinkedIn members. Have a profile for both yourself and your business. To be high on the list of profiles that appears when someone searches for your business, use keywords in your profile multiple times. If you own an architectural firm, for example, repeat words such as “architecture,” “architecture design” or “building architecture.” (Two or three terms with the key phrase is enough.) If you do this correctly, your LinkedIn profile will also come up high in a Google search.
  2. Connect with prospects by using Advanced People Search. Choose an industry (e.g. Architecture & planning) where you could find customers who might need your services. The search also will show you people you know who know the people who come up in the results. Use the people you know for recommendations and introductions. Also, ask satisfied LinkedIn members who are customers to write recommendations about your company.
  3. Find your next great employee or vendor. Post a job on LinkedIn (you’ll have to pay a fee). Better yet, enter the skills you’re looking for in an employee (or the resources you need from a vendor) in Advanced People Search. Contact the people and vendors who come up and see if they’re interested in working for you.

Real Estate Corner Q & A . . .

Q.  Are there any secrets to finding the right home at the right price with the right financing?
A.  Lots of homebuyers waste time and money by not doing their homework before going home shopping. Here’s what you should do:

  • Analyze your NEEDS before you start looking. Make a list, including price range, size, general location, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.
  • Know what you WANT in your next home. List the features you’d like to have and rank them in terms of importance. If you have a spouse, set your priorities as a couple.
  • Understand how much home you can afford. Become familiar with your “payment-to-income ratio” and your “debt-to-income ratio,” two guides bankers and mortgage lenders use to determine how much loan you can afford.

Great news for foreign buyers of Mexico properties.  The Chamber of Deputies approved in committees a constitutional reform to allow foreigners to buy land in border areas and beaches exclusively for housing.  This will eliminate the need for the property title to be held by a bank in the form of a trust.  So if this rule is passed and made permanent, it will be a big incentive for foreign investors to buy Mexico property as they can own property by direct ownership.

P.S.  THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES JUST APPROVED THE AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE 27 AND FOREIGNERS CAN NOW PURCHASE BORDER AND BEACH FRONT PROPERTY FOR HOMES WITHOUT HAVING TO USE A BANK TRUST TO HOLD THE TITLE. Now we just have to wait for the president to sign the amendment and wait for the government to get their ducks in a row to figure out how it is going to work and when it becomes effective.

Today’s Brain Teaser . . .

Julie was born on December 14, yet her birthday is always celebrated in the summer. Why?
(see answer below)

Don’t Be Fooled By The Common “Relative In Trouble” Scam

You get a phone call that one of your relatives has had an accident, been robbed, or is stranded in another country. Your loved one needs cash and asks that you wire the money. This scam has been around a while, but the number of people (particularly the elderly) who are falling for it is rising. Do the following so you don’t get scammed:

  • Question the caller about the family member in trouble. The call may start with “Hi Grandma!” (Scammers may get family information from social networking sites.) Before saying a name, ask the caller for their middle name. If the caller says, “It’s about your granddaughter,” ask “Which one?” before saying a name.
  • Don’t let the caller instill fear. Fear that something bad will happen if the money is not sent can be a motivating factor to comply with the request. Fear can cloud rational thinking.
  • Don’t keep the call a secret. Posing to be your relative, the caller may say they are too embarrassed and to not tell others. But don’t be fooled by this trick – let others know about the request immediately. Ask the caller if you can call back – they won’t want to give you a number.
  • Try to make contact with the “real” person. Hang up with the imposter and call, email, or text your real relative. If they are on vacation, contact other relatives to find out their itinerary.

If you get a “relative in trouble” call or fall for something else you think is a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Go to www.ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-FTC-HELP. You also can contact your State Attorney General’s office.

Save $$$ On Your Phone Bill

Have you reviewed your phone situation lately? Consider one or all of these options to save hundreds of dollars a year:
Eliminate your landline. First, study your phone bill to see if you’re paying for extras (like caller ID) you may not need. If you decide to ditch your landline because you have a cell phone, make sure you have excellent cell coverage at home. Another option is to switch to VOIP (voice over internet protocol) like Vonage, Skype, Ooma and even MagicJack. Unlimited local and long distance calls can range from $5 to $20 a month, that can save you over $100 per year.
Bundle your services. You can save $20 or more per month if you get your cable, Internet, and landline from the same provider. There’s an extra $240 each year in your pocket for the same services.
Ask your cell phone provider for a cheaper plan. If you talk to the same people daily, a “favorites” plan may better suit your needs. If you’re sending more text messages, go to an unlimited texting plan. Or, consider a pre-paid cell phone where you only pay for minutes you use. Depending on your talking time, that could save you up to $500 a year.

Today’s Brain Teaser . . .

A butcher stands 5 feet, 11 inches tall and wears size 11 shoes. What does he weigh?
(see answer below)

Top 10 First Aid Mistakes & The Correct Response

According to the Red Cross, these are the 10 most common first aid mistakes and what to do for each situation. By knowing the correct response in an emergency you can help someone survive until help arrives, and make recovering from personal injuries faster.
Mistake #1: Putting butter or ice on burns. Do This Instead: You should rinse the area with cool water and cover with a sterile dressing so you don’t damage the skin tissue. If the burn is severe, see a doctor.
Mistake #2: Inducing vomiting with your finger or by taking “syrup of ipecac” when a poisonous substance is swallowed. Do This Instead: Call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or your doctor. Inducing vomiting can make be even more harmful. Don’t eat or drink anything unless directed by a medical professional.
Mistake #3: Treating a bleeding limb by applying a tourniquet. Do This Instead: Pad the wound with sterile gauze, apply direct pressure and wrap the wound securely. Get medical help if the bleeding doesn’t stop, the wound is deep, or is caused by an animal bite.
Mistake #4: Applying heat to a sprain, strain, or fracture. Do This Instead: Put an ice bag on the injury for 20 minutes to reduce swelling, and use a barrier between the ice and skin.
Mistake #5: Moving a car accident victim away from the scene. Do This Instead: Leave the injured person in place until paramedics arrive – unless the car is on fire, in an unsafe location, or the person is not breathing and you have to perform CPR on a flat surface.
Mistake #6: Rubbing when there’s a foreign substance in your eye. Do This Instead: Rinse the eye with tap water. Rubbing it could scratch the eye.
Mistake #7: Using hot water to thaw a cold extremity. Do This Instead: Gradually warm the extremity by soaking it in lukewarm water. Drastic temperature change can cause further damage.
Mistake #8: Rubbing alcohol on the skin to reduce a fever. Do This Instead: Lower the fever by giving ibuprofen. If a high fever continues for several days, see a physician or go to the ER. Using alcohol may cause alcohol poisoning, especially in young children.
Mistake #9: Treating an allergic reaction to bee stings at home. Do This Instead: Call an ambulance if the victim has breathing problems, tight throat, or swollen tongue. Delaying professional treatment for a respiratory reaction could be fatal.
Mistake #10: Applying ointment to a cut or scrape, then covering it with a bandage, and leaving it untended to heal for a few days. Do This Instead: First, wash the wound with soap and water. Bandage it and change the dressing twice a day. Since fresh air allows the wound to heal, it’s best not to use ointment, which can keep the wound moist. Use a looser dressing at bedtime so the wound can get air.

Smart Financial Moves For Soon-To-Be Parents

About to add to your family? Here are insurance and savings tips:

  • Review your health insurance before you get pregnant (if possible). Most group health plans must cover maternity care, but 87 percent of individual plans do not. Under health care reform, in 2014, maternity and newborn services must be covered by all new plans sold to individuals and small businesses and by plans sold on state-based insurance exchanges. If you don’t have insurance for the child, see options at www.insurekidsnow.gov.
  • Purchase adequate life insurance. Experts suggest you want to have around $250,000 of life insurance per child. Estimate how much you’ll need at www.lifehappens.org.
  • Invest in a 529 savings plan for your child’s education. A “moderate” college budget for an in-state public college is between $15,000 and $20,000 per year, while a moderate budget at a private college can be up to $45,000 each year. Learn about 529 plans and use the college cost calculator at www.collegesavings.org.

 Real Estate Corner Q & A . . .

Q.  What homework should I do before I get a loan to buy a home?
A.  Here are three big tips many people don’t consider when buying a home:

  • Understand how much home you can afford. Calculate the two numbers bankers and mortgage lenders use to determine the how much they will loan to you: payment-to-income ratio and debt-to-income ratio.
  • Understand the basics of home financing. Your ability to afford a home will be related to its price, your down payment (and the amount you’ll finance), the interest rate and points of your loan, the term and the type of your loan. Study these items and the relationship between them.

Today’s Brain Teaser . . .

A mile-long train is moving at sixty miles an hour when it   reaches a mile-long tunnel. How long does it take the entire train to pass   through the tunnel?

(see answer below)

  Avoid The 4 Most Common
Reasons For Car Accidents

Isn’t it scary? You’re   driving along and all of a sudden you don’t have control of your vehicle. You   grip the steering wheel with both hands and with one violent thrust, press   down on the brake pedal as hard as you can until you come to a complete stop.

You look up, then breathe a sigh of relief. No   one was hurt. You were lucky… but what if there were another car around?

Most people rely on luck to save them when they   get in a situation that could lead to a car accident. The feeling is,   accidents on the road are unavoidable. Collisions from someone making a bad   decision or being distracted, like running a red light or merging into your   car, can and do happen even if you’re the safest driver in the world.

But there are accidents you can avoid and   they’re actually the most common reasons why car accidents occur. Everyone   will face one if not all four of these situations where you lose control of   your vehicle. Here’s exactly what to do if, and when, they happen to you:

  1. Suddenly Swerving? – Do this: If you have to swerve to avoid hitting an        animal or another car, turn your car first, then press the brake pedal.
  1. Tire Blowout?        – Do this: If you hear a loud pop and suddenly lose control, steer the        car as straight as possible and don’t turn or brake. Press the gas pedal        slightly to accelerate, which helps keep the car under control. Then        slowly decelerate by pressing the brake to stop your vehicle.
  1. Running Off The Road? – Do this: If the side of your car drops off the        edge of the road, steer straight and slow down gradually as you come to        a stop on the shoulder. Then drive back onto the road.
  1. Sliding On Pavement? – Do this: If the roads are wet or icy and your car        starts to slide, turn in the direction of the slide and let off the gas.        Don’t slam on your brakes or they could lock up, press the brake slowly.

 Relieve Eye Pain In   Seconds

Do   you spend much of the day staring at a computer, sending text messages on   your phone, and ending the evening by watching a movie on a high-definition   TV? No wonder your eyes are tired! Here are four exercises to relieve eye   pain and make them not feel dry, itchy, blurred, and strained:

Eye Roll:    While keeping your eyes open and head still, roll your eyes up to look at the   ceiling, roll around clockwise slowly five times. Repeat the motion counter   clockwise.

Palming:    Rub the palms of your hands together until they are warm. Cover your eyes and   concentrate on your breath until your palms cool.

Massage:    Place your fingertips on your eyelids and gently move them in a circular   motion for 60 seconds.

Temple Turning:    Place the knuckles of your thumbs on the sides of your eyes near the temples.   Massage by circling the temples three times. Do the same above the midpoint   of your eyebrows and both sides of the bridge of your nose.

It’s also a good idea to give your eyes a rest every 25 minutes spent reading   or sitting in front of back-lit screen (computer, tablet, phone, TV). Simply   get up and look around the room at other objects for 5 minutes.

3 Email Tips To Get   More Done . . .

These email tips will get more people to respond to your emails and help you   get work done faster:

1. State the content   and purpose in the subject line. This gives the recipient a   chance to sort and prioritize their email. Be specific and if you need a   response quickly, add “Action Required” or “Response Needed” to the subject   line.

2. Know when to use CC   and BCC. Use CC to copy people who are directly involved.   This keeps them involved in the email conversation. Use BCC when you want to   notify someone that an email was sent but you don’t want the main recipient   to see who you are notifying.

3. Use “Forward”   effectively. When someone responds and you want to notify   another person, simply Forward the email with a message that says, “FYI.” If   someone has not responded to your email after several days or weeks, go to   your Sent Messages and Forward them your email but change the subject line to   say, “FWD: Did you get this?”

Simply pick the dress   you want from over 25,000 available and have it delivered the next day. Then   keep it for 4 or 8 days, and mail it back when you’re done. Not to be left out, guys now have more options for neckwear with tie rental   services. TieSociety.com lets you rent 3 ties with   no return date for $20 a month, and you can exchange any of your designer   ties at any time.

A.  Avoid scammers, and talk to one or more of these   professionals:

  • A Foreclosure Counselor will help you evaluate your current financial situation        and serve as an advocate with your bank, free of charge.

  • A Credit Counselor can help you develop a plan to avoid future        financial difficulty as well as help you repair your credit score.
  • An Attorney        can help you if your lender has filed a foreclosure lawsuit.

Today’s Brain Teaser . . .

Brothers and sisters I have none. But this man’s father is   my father’s son. Who is the man?

(see answer below)

How To Prevent Sports  & Exercise Injuries

Millions of people experience a   sports or exercise injury each year. Shin splints, pulled muscles, aching   kneecaps, and strained hamstring muscles are common when you begin a new   exercise program or put too much stress on your body.

Here are tips to avoid getting hurt when exercising or playing sports:

    Have A Fitness Test:

A visit to your doctor is important if you are        starting a new exercise program. Your doctor may find an undiagnosed        heart condition or other disease that will require workout modifications.

    • Know Your Body: It sounds basic, but many fail to make adjustments        to account for known body weaknesses. For example, if you have knee        problems you may want to try a stationary bike instead of a treadmill.
    • Wear Proper Attire: Wear proper shoes that fit and grip the ground to        avoid slipping or tripping. Workout clothes that keep you warm but not        hot are best to avoid getting overheated and passing out.
    • Act Your Age:        When you get excited about a new workout or sport, you can do too much,        too quickly and push yourself too long. Work with a trainer, and make        sure you’re using the correct technique.
    • Feed Your Muscles And Hydrate Your Body: A high protein meal one hour before your workout        will give you the fuel you need to keep going. Thirty minutes before you        exercise, drink about 16 ounces of water. Drink more water during your        workout to replace the fluids you’re losing.
    • Know The Injury Warning Signs: If you have any of the following for more than 48        hours, see a physician: joint pain (including swelling, redness and        heat), reduced range of motion, or numbness, and tingling.

What You Should Know About Home Health Tests

At-home health screening tests are   becoming increasingly popular, because they are quick, confidential and can   help you detect or monitor specific conditions. The most common tests are
Diabetes Screening: Measures A1c levels and average blood glucose (sugar)  Levels.

Home Pregnancy: Gives women an early confirmation of pregnancy.

      HIV:

Allows you to determine if you have the antibodies to HIV-1 (Human        Immunodeficiency Virus, Type 1) in your blood.

      • Thyroid hormone levels: Measures TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormones) in the        blood to indicate an underactive or overactive thyroid.
      • Paternity:        Uses DNA from the inside of your cheek. Accuracy is claimed to be        greater than 99 percent to prove or disprove paternity.
      • Cholesterol:        Evaluates total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
      • Drug Use:        Uses a urine, saliva, or hair sample to test for marijuana, cocaine        amphetamines, and opiates.

What You Should Know To Buy And   Use At-Home Tests:

Follow test instructions carefully; not doing so can affect results.

      • Buy a test that is FDA approved. To see if the test        is approved, go to www.fda.gov,        enter “search IVD” in the box at the top right, click the search button,        then choose “OTC – Over The Counter” database.
      • Pharmacies sell FDA-approved tests. Talk to the pharmacist when you buy one if you have any questions about how to properly use the test.
      • Be cautious of buying the tests online. While there are some reputable sellers, there are many that are not. Ask the selle if the product is FDA-approved (it may not be if it’s made outside the U.S.).
      • You may still need to see your doctor to discuss questions about a test or a test result.

Appliance repair experts say that up to 25 percent of repair calls have   simple solutions. Try these fixes before calling the appliance repair   service.

Refrigerator is not   cold. If you can’t get the refrigerator cold enough by   lowering the setting, try looking under it. You probably have dirty condenser   coils. Unplug the fridge, remove the grill and vacuum the coils to remove   dirt and dust.

Dishwasher is not   running. The float switch inside the dishwasher tells it when   enough water has entered and when to begin washing. See if the switch is   jammed in the up position from objects like forks.

Weak vacuum suction.   If cleaning the filters and bags doesn’t help, check the hose for an   obstruction. Drop a coin in one end and if it doesn’t come out, try to   dislodge the debris with a broomstick.

      Real Estate Corner Q & A . . .

      Q.  What do buyers really   want when looking for a house?

      A.  Here are ways to tap into what every buyer wants:

      • Every buyer wants a place to call “home”. The decision to buy is emotional, not 100% logical.  Buyers look at a “house,” but they’re really evaluating it for its potential to become their home. Properly staging your house allows buyers to have an emotional experience – seeing their family living there.
      • Every buyer wants a bargain. Subtly influence buyers by using such phrases as        “priced to sell” or “a unique bargain at this price.”
      • Every buyer wants to claim special discounts. You can motivate a sale by creating a sense of urgency. Consider using special terms that expire on a fixed date.

      What You Should Know
      About Home Health Tests

At-home health screening tests are   becoming increasingly popular, because they are quick, confidential and can   help you detect or monitor specific conditions. The most common tests are:

      • Diabetes Screening: Measures A1c levels and average blood glucose (sugar)        levels.

      • Home Pregnancy: Gives women an early confirmation of pregnancy.

      • HIV:        Allows you to determine if you have the antibodies to HIV-1 (Human        Immunodeficiency Virus, Type 1) in your blood.

      • Follow test instructions carefully; not doing so can        affect results.

Ask the seller        if the product is FDA-approved (it may not be if it’s made outside the        U.S.).

      • You may still need to see your doctor to discuss questions        about a test or a test result.

Save Money With These Quick   Appliance Fixes . . .

      Today’s Brain Teaser . . .

On a construction site, one man challenged another by saying, “Carry anything in this wheel barrow to that cone and back. If I can’t carry the same thing, the same distance twice, I will give you $100.” The challenged worker saw 400 bricks, a steel beam and 10 men standing to watch. He went home with the $100. What did he put in the wheel barrow?
      (see answer below)

Avoid These Mistakes To Keep Your Home Safe From Burglars

Experienced burglars do their homework before breaking into your home, and you’re making it easier for them!
Surveys conducted of convicted burglars reveal the following common mistakes to avoid:
Putting your door key under a potted plant, welcome mat, or rock. Better idea: Give an extra key to a neighbor.
Leaving a note on the front door for a visitor, that says you’ll be back soon. An experienced burglar only needs five minutes to make a clean sweep of your home. Better idea: Text your visitor, letting them know when you’ll be back.
Hiding valuables in the bedroom. The first places burglars look are the underwear drawer, between the mattress, and on the highest shelf of the master bedroom closet. Better idea: Use a safe or safety deposit box for high-priced items.
Leaving big boxes from high-ticket items on the curb. New electronics have a higher value for resale. Better idea: Fold or cut the box into pieces and hide it in a trash can.
Not stopping newspaper and mail delivery and leaving a light on when out of town. A pile of papers and no lights on are easy clues no one is home. Better idea: Have a neighbor pick the items up, and buy a timer to turn your lights on and off to make it appear you’re home.

5 Ways To Strengthen Your Immunity Against Colds & Flu

Don’t let a COLD or FLU get to YOUthis season. The human body has many ways to naturally fight infection, but you need to give it all the help you can. Here’s how to boost your immunity and fight off those nasty germs:

      • Eat healthy food. Load up on fresh fruits and veggies like leafy greens. Avoid sugar because it can interfere with the enzymes you need to boost your immune system.
      • Supercharge your body. Your body can naturally kill a virus. So spring into action during the first 24 hours to combat illness. Once you feel a few symptoms, start drinking filtered water, broths, and soups with lots of garlic, onions, and spices. Take supplements like echinacea, vitamin C, and elderberry.
      • Breathe clean air. Avoid smoking, air pollutants, indoor dust, and ash from fireplaces that can irritate the lining of your nose and throat.
      • Avoid sick people. It sounds obvious, right? But it’s easy to forget. Try not to be in the same room, breathing the same air as someone ill for long. Wash your hands frequently and disinfect everything they touch.
      • Get a flu shot. The Centers For Disease Control & Prevention recommends that everyone who is at least 6 months old get the seasonal flu vaccine. It protects against 3 flu viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season.

When Buying Electronics, Consider These Features . . .

Smartphones. Battery life is key. You won’t think the phone is so smart if it dies during a conversation. Go to www.cnet.com for reviews on the “talk-time” battery life of different models.

HD Televisions. Bigger is not always better because you want to buy the right size for your room. Use the television size calculator at www.televisiontutor.com to suggest minimum and maximum size for watching comfortably. You also can learn the difference between plasma and LCD technologies.

Personal Computers. Computer memory or RAM is important to performance. It determines how many applications can run at the same time. While more memory is worth paying for, you can save money by getting a more modest hard drive if you don’t perform tasks like extensive photo and video editing or gaming.

      Real Estate Corner Q & A . . .

      Q.  What advice would you give to first-time homebuyers?
      A.  The best advice is to learn from the mistakes of others. Here are two of the most common mistakes I see:

      • Not knowing what you can afford. Examine your budget, get a copy of your credit report, and sit down with a qualified lender to determine how much of a loan you can afford. Ask your REALTOR® for several lender recommendations and comparison shop for a mortgage before looking for a home.
      • Forgetting to consider the overall costs of home ownership. You can make the monthly payment, but remember to add in the cost for homeowners’ insurance, property taxes, utilities, plus maintenance.

Inside each of these two words is another word that, when combined, will create a common phrase.

How To Invest As You Age

Financial investments should change as you move through the stages of your life. Consider these strategies to make better use of your hard-earned money.
During your 30s and 40s:These are years of increasing income and increasing demands for your money, particularly providing for your children.

      • Life insurance is relatively inexpensive at this stage of your life. Buying a policy also is a way of providing for your family’s future.
      • 529 plans offer tax-advantaged savings for your children’s education. For details, which vary by state, go to www.savingforcollege.com.
      • Annuities can be a good addition to an IRA or 401k retirement account, and usually have tax-deferred options and guaranteed life income.

During your 50s:Prepare for a well-funded retirement during these years.

      • Remove all risks from your retirement plan. Think about a retirement date and your ability to meet that date. Reduce investments in such things as your employer’s company.
      • Take advantage of slowing expenses. You are at the top of your earning power, and big expenses, like children living at home, are likely reduced. Consider paying off your mortgage or increasing your investments.

During your 60s and beyond:This is a time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

      • Test living on projected income before stopping work. If your expected retirement income will be 70 percent of your current paycheck, set aside 30 percent now and see what it’s like to live on the rest.
      • Apply for Social Security and Medicare. Visit these sites to help you make important decisions about these programs: www.socialsecurity.gov and www.medicare.gov.

Relieve Computer Pain In 3 Easy Steps

If you spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer, you may be experiencing fatigue, as well as aches and pains in your neck, back, shoulders, eyes, wrists and legs. Relieve the discomfort by following these tips:
STEP #1: Give your body support to avoid aches and pains:

      • Invest in a good lumbar chair and adjust it so your feet rest comfortably on the floor. Press your bottom against the back of the chair and use a lumbar cushion that causes your lower back to arch slightly. Keep your knees in line with your hips or raised slightly above them. Never slump or slouch forward.
      • Sit close to the desk so your upper arms are parallel to your spine and your elbows are at a 90-degree angle to the keyboard. Put the mouse close to the keyboard to keep your arm from being fully extended. Give your wrists proper support so they rest in a neutral position.
      • Place the monitor so your gaze is aimed at the center of the screen, which should be 15 to 25 inches away from your eyes.

STEP #2: Move regularly to avoid stiffness and eye strain:

      • Stand, stretch, and walk at least a minute or two every half hour. To stretch, reach both arms above your head. Grasp each elbow and lean gently to each side and feel the side of your body release tension.
      • Avoid “computer vision syndrome” (headaches and eye strain are symptoms) by using the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.

STEP #3: Stay hydrated and nourished to avoid fatigue:

      • Drink water (or other fluids) to flush out some of the mineral build-up that occurs in inactive muscles.
      • Eat healthy snacks like fruit and nuts at your desk to maintain your energy and productivity.

      A.  Make sure you address both the outside and the inside of the house by cleaning and de-cluttering everything, from the front yard to the garage to the kitchen, bathrooms, and basement. Put away your personal items so buyers can imagine themselves living there.
One way to take years off your home is with paint. Check the home’s exterior paint job, and don’t forget the front door, mailbox, garage doors, and walkways. In the interior, remove the pictures from the walls (as well as old wallpaper) and paint the walls in a neutral color.
Also, consider these tips if you want to sell your home fast for a good price: a) Hire professional cleaners to do the work; b) Get a home inspection before you put it on the market); and c) Make your landscaping look sharp.

      Today’s Brain Teaser . . .

What lives without a body; hears without ears; and speaks without a mouth?
      (see answer below)

12 Secrets To More Restful Sleep

If you lie awake at night thinking about all the things you have to do, you’re not alone. Polls show that a growing percentage of people are getting less than six hours of sleep and the number of people who get eight or more hours is dwindling. Here are the secrets to help you get a good night’s rest:
      Prepare your bedroom:

      • Create a sleep sanctuary by eliminating noises, TV, and computers.
      • Limit your bed to only two things – sleep and sex.
      • Indulge in some type of bedtime ritual. It can be a warm bath, light snack, or time on your favorite quiet hobby like reading.
      • Invest in a good bed. You are in it about 1/3 of your life and the cost of a good mattress is much cheaper than poor health.

      Prepare your body:

      • Avoid foods containing tyramine in the evening. Some of those are bananas, chocolate, liver, avocado, cheese, beer, and wine.
      • Eat alkaline foods like apricots, figs, almonds, turnips, or spinach. They enhance sleep’s anabolic process.
      • Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and limit alcohol before bedtime.
      • Exercise, but not within two hours of bedtime. Some people like to exercise in the early evening. But a morning routine will give you the energy to work all day. You’ll then be ready to slow down to rest at night.
      • Use aromatherapy with herbs such as lavender or valerian.

      Prepare your mind:

      • Try meditation. Focus your brain on a single thought (or nothing at all) as you listen to your body with eyes closed.
      • Unwind with deep breathing. Breathe in with your abdomen expanding. Hold for 3 seconds and release air slowly to expel as much air as possible. Practice for 10 minutes before retiring to sleep.
      • Change your expectations and empower your ability to sleep. If you’ve been struggling with sleep for some time, you may have attitudes that defeat you. Don’t let your mind worry about how long it will take to get to sleep or how tired you might feel tomorrow. Expect to sleep well.

How To Find An Auto Mechanic That Won’t Rip You Off

The best way to find any service provider, including an auto mechanic, is based on referrals from friends and family. But automobile breakdowns rarely happen at convenient times or places, and you may need to select from repair shops within a few miles. Look for these five things to find a good mechanic:

      1. Certifications: Look for a plaque on the wall for ASE certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Remember that not every mechanic in the garage will be certified for your particular type of repairs. If they have the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence it means that at least 75 percent of the techs have been certified and each area of service in the shop has someone certified in that area.
      2. Length of time in business: Experience helps. Look for a shop that has been in the same location more than five years. If you see a shop, you can search for user reviews of their work at a site like www.yelp.com.
      3. Billing Rate: If you can, talk to the owner of the garage. One of the questions to ask is whether they charge a “straight hourly rate” based on the actual time spent on the repair or “book rate” that can be higher.
      4. Referrals and opinions from the web: If you have a smart phone, get other opinions by searching an online forum about your issue. A good place to start is at www.edmunds.com/forums. For another viewpoint, ask a mechanic from another auto shop who does not work on your type of vehicle. The shop specializing in European cars can probably tell you the best mechanic for a Japanese vehicle.
      5. Getting the right thing fixed: Once you find a shop, don’t be fooled into fixes you may not need. You can find tools for diagnosing symptoms and estimating repair costs at www.automd.com. You’ll also find quick online advice at www.repairpal.com, which has a useful question and answer tool.

      Real Estate Corner Q & A . . .

      Q.  My home has been on the market several months. What can I do to keep it from looking like a stale listing and get it sold?
      A.  You may know price can be the most important factor in getting a home sold, but there are other things that can give you a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Offer incentives: Mentioning in the listing description that you are willing to pay some of the closing costs, repairs or inspections can make a big difference in making your home attractive to buyers.
Internet exposure: Today’s buyers are searching for homes on popular real estate search websites like www.trulia.com, www.zillow.com, and www.realtor.com. It is critical that the listing is re-submitted to as many sites as possible if the price has changed.
Fresh photos: This is particularly true if your old pictures reflect a different season. Photos from the spring are a red flag to homes in the fall.

      Today’s Brain Teaser . . .

What is the longest word in the English language that does not use any vowels?
      (see answer below)

New Hands-Only CPR Is Easy, Saves More Lives

An adult suddenly collapses in front of you. Will you feel helpless or know what to do to save his or her life? You’ll be glad to know that the American Heart Association has simplified things so anyone can save a life. This new CPR method doesn’t require certification or mouth-to-mouth contact but can double the chance of survival.*
Don’t worry about hurting the person. If they’ve stopped breathing, you can only help them. Good Samaritan laws protect you from legal risk. It’s better to break a rib than stand by in fear of not doing the right thing. Here’s how to use continuous chest compression CPR to save lives:

      1. Call 911. Tell them your location and that someone is not breathing. Lay the person on their back on a hard surface.
      2. Place the bottom your palm in the center of the person’s chest with your other palm on top of it.
      3. Lock your elbows and put your shoulders directly above your hands in the center of the person’s chest. Use your entire upper body to force the chest cavity downward.
      4. Push HARD in rapid repetitions. When you compress the chest with quick forceful motion, the recoil of the person’s body allows the heart to continue pumping blood. With blood circulating, the brain gets what it needs and your action can keep the person alive.
      5. Maintain the pumping action at a rate of 100 times per minute until paramedics arrive. It’s best to have a second person to take turns with you to keep up the pace. The beat from the song Staying Alive by the Bee Gees is about the speed you need.
      6. Do not stop to check for breath or a pulse. Keep compressing the chest until help arrives.

To watch a short video that demonstrates this easy method, go to the American Heart Association’s website at: www.handsonlycpr.org. *Conventional CPR (with your mouth) may be better than Hands-Only CPR for infants and children, or teens and adults whom you did not see collapse.

Save Thousands On College With These 5 Financial Aid Secrets

Do you have a senior in high school this year? If you do (or know someone who does), it’s time to start applying to colleges and seeking the financial aid and scholarships you’ll need to help pay for their education. Here are five secrets to pay less for higher education:
When parents’ income matters.  The year prior to the student’s high school graduation is the basis for financial aid calculations. When possible, shift income to this year before Spring graduation in the coming year. This may help you qualify for more financial aid.
Apply early or lose funding.  After January 1, complete and submit the Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov, and apply for aid packages your school(s) of choice may require.
Cheaper college tuition may cost you more.  Private schools are often endowed with funds to offer up to 100% the cost of college. State schools may have lower tuition costs, but significantly less scholarship money. Apply to both types of schools and compare overall costs after scholarships are factored into the equation.
Do not “negotiate.”  Each school has different rules on how scholarship money is awarded. It doesn’t help to mention another school’s offer to the aid director. It won’t get you a better scholarship package. However, it is okay to ask a college to review a previous decision by saying: “What else can you find to make it possible for my child to go to school here?”
Outside awards may help, but only slightly.  Awards from community organizations may range from $100 to $1,000 and are a great source of pride. Keep in mind that these cash awards are considered a resource by the IRS and may lower your ability for federal funding. Your best option is to apply for as many scholarships offered directly from the college before spending too much time on outside funding.

      Real Estate Corner Q & A . . .

      Q.  How do I get the best home for the lowest price?
      A.  Price is only one of several factors to consider when you purchase a home.
Preferences: Make two lists with one outlining your needs and the other a list of your wants. Compare lists with other members of your family so you are agree on what’s important before you start looking.
Budget: Get pre-approved by a qualified loan officer before your search to find out what monthly mortgage payment is possible given your debt and income.
Location: The “best” price is usually not the cheapest price. Desirable locations demand higher prices. But communities with higher prices also often retain their value the best.
Negotiation: Inexperienced buyers sometimes want to “lowball” their initial offer. Too often they end up disappointed for a variety of reasons such as competition with other buyers, a negative reaction from the seller, and the need to start all over again if negotiations fail.

Cure Headache Pain With These 7 Natural Remedies

If you suffer from headaches, try a natural remedy before turning to
prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Traditional medicine can
cause unwanted side effects for many people, which is why alternative,
natural methods are gaining in popularity. Talk to your doctor
about using these seven natural headache remedies:

      1. Magnesium:  Sometimes migraine sufferers have been found to
be deficient in magnesium.   Magnesium is found in dark green
vegetables, nuts, and seeds. In tablet form, 400 to 600 milligrams
each day may help  reduce headache frequency.
      2. Butterbur:  This herb has been shown to help prevent headache
attacks because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Take 75 milligrams
        each day.
      3. Ginger:  This herb has been used for thousands of years in India.
New research indicates that it reduces inflammation in small blood
vessels, including ones in the brain. Try infusing a tea with fresh
ginger root from the produce department or from dried powder.
      4. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2):  Studies show Vitamin B can correct small
deficiencies in brain-cells. Get more riboflavin by eating leafy green
vegetables, dairy products, beans, almonds, mushrooms, or tomatoes.
      5. Sunshine:  The Vitamin D produced when you spend time out in the sun
      6. seems to affect the way you perceive pain. If you don’t get enough time
outdoors, try taking a 2,000 milligram tablet daily.
      7. Rosemary:  The soothing smell of rosemary tea can help you relax and
      8. relieve head tension. Infuse 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried herb in a cup.
Also, use rosemary oil to massage into your temples for headache relief.
      9. Valerian:  Although the smell is rather unpleasant, this herb has been
used since the Middle Ages to relieve pain and relax the body.  It also
promotes good sleep.  Buy it where vitamins and supplements are sold.

      Fun Facts and Laughs

      2 Non-Driving Car Dangers . . .

DANGER #1: Trunk Entrapment. In summer months,
children can die if thye are trapped inside the car trunk.
When you leave your car, lock the doors so kids can’t
pop the trunk or get in through the fold-down seats.
Since 2001, car manufacturers have included an
emergency trunk release. Older cars can be retrofitted
with an inexpensive kit at: www.aablelocksmiths.com.

DANGER #2: Service Station Fires. Static electricity
mixed with gasoline vapors can ignite a fire.   The
Petroleum Equipment Institute warns that starting to
pump gas, followed by getting in and out of the car, and
then touching the gas nozzle is a common way to ignite
a fire. See a video  at: www.pei.org/static.  If you get in
and out of the car while the gas is pumping, touch metal
on the outside of your car to discharge any potential static
electricity.   If a fire starts while fueling, don’t try to
remove the nozzle. Call for help.

      Have A Laugh — “Who Survived?” . . .

Nine men and one woman were hanging on a rope under
a helicopter. The rope wasn’t strong enough to carry
them all so they decided one had to drop off.
The woman made a touching speech saying she would let
go of the rope because, as a woman, she was used to
giving up everything for her husband and kids, and
for men in general without ever getting anything in
      return.
As soon as she finished her speech, all the men
      started clapping their hands…

      Real Estate Corner Q & A . . .

      Q.  How do I make my home stand out in the market
      without spending much money?
      A.  If you want to get offers from buyers, make a great first
impression by improving these potential turn-offs:
Messy Landscaping:  Buyers are looking for curb appeal.
Take the time to clean up an overgrown yard.
Nasty Odors:  You may not smell some odors in your home
because you’ve become desensitized to them. Ask your
REALTOR® if there are odors (smoke, pet odors)
and how you can get rid of them.
Too Much Clutter:  Pack away any items like excess furniture,
personal pictures and nick-knacks. They make your rooms look
smaller and distract the buyer from really seeing the house itself.
Old Paint:   A fresh coat of neutral-colored paint is a low-cost
way to make your rooms look new and fresh.
