Buying real estate may not be easy. The real
estate business in Mexico is not regulated; there are no licensing
requirements for agents, and the Multiple Listing Services that
Americans are used to are just beginning in some areas. Appraisals are
available, but they are still relatively new. The best thing to do is
go slowly. Educate yourself as much as possible about Mexican laws and
procedures. Do a lot of comparison shopping. Talk to the locals about
the reputations of the people selling real estate. If you go slowly and
carefully, you can find excellent investments. Using title insurance,
appraisals, and American financing will increase your security. (See buying real estate in Mexico
page for more information.)
